Grasse is considered the world capital of perfume. 2/3 of French natural aromatic production comes from the town. The town was a medieval producer of leather goods, especially gloves. During the Renaissance a fashion arose in Italy for perfumed gloves and so the long association with perfumes started. During the 18th century perfumes replaced gloves as the town’s main industry. This is an introduction to the town.
This is a walking tour of the old town center of Grasse. It gives an excellent look at this medieval town.
This video shows the flower harvesting in the fields around Grasse, and then the extraction process to produce the waxy fragrance concentrate known as ‘the concrete’. The video shows the traditional method for harvesting and the techniques of the growers and perfumers.
